Coaching is a successful intervention for research communities. Combinations of workshops and coaching are the most effective at encouraging positive and sustainable change

How to help labs do better science

In one of the survey’s starkest findings, two-thirds of researchers who head laboratories said they had not had training in managing people or running a lab in the past year — and the majority of those said they wanted some (see ‘Training gap’). “One of the biggest surprises of my PI career is how difficult the management part is,” says Šebesta. “I would love to have had some training.” And of the PIs who had received training, five-sixths found it useful. Nearly half of the Principle Investigators in our survey want training in managing people or running a lab but have not been able to get it recently.

Reviews

“The results of the program have been outstanding. Almost all of the people who have participated in the program now have either responsibility for taking the lead on a national or international research project, received a promotion, increased their grant making ability or the calibre and number of students, with several achieving a combination of these. Prof Mike Wilkinson recently estimated the program participants achieved $4.7m in grants in 2012 (17% of the income for the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine) and analysis of the number of grant applications and successes in the first half of 2013 shows a significant increase in the number of both, with the graduates of the WRI’s Research Leadership Development Program prominently featured. A total of $22m was awarded to AFW researchers in the first six months of 2013, compared to the past average of $10-12m over a similar period.” Academic Leader

“I don’t doubt that my 2012 achievements (which included a SA Tall Poppy Award, finishing 2 nd in the eChallenge, a Stephen Cole the Elder Teaching Award and a $460K GWRDC grant) reflect the investment in my leadership development.” Academic Leader

More than 40% of the non-PIs also said their lab could do better science if PIs received more training in mentoring and management. Among the least happy, more than 70% indicated that this was their main desire.
Academic Leadership Institute also offers Group Coaching and One on One Coaching to reinforce the training and to fast-track those who need to immediately step into leadership roles.

Nature survey of more than 3,200 scientists. The results suggest that a lack of training in lab and personnel management is one of the strongest contributors to an unhealthy lab culture.
